What an AI age guesser does
An age guesser looks at a face and estimates the age it appears to be. People do this all day without thinking; an AI age guesser does it from a single photo, consistently, and without knowing anything else about the person.

AI age guesser vs. a human guess
People are good at guessing age but they are not neutral. Studies of human age perception show a consistent pull toward the middle: young faces get guessed a little older and older faces a little younger, and we are most accurate with faces close to our own age. Context also leaks in, from clothes and voice to what we already know.
An AI age guesser only sees pixels, so it avoids the social side of the bias, but it is far more sensitive to the photo: lighting, compression and filters can move its answer.
